Wait a Minute
Take time for this Factory Model exhibit
BY CARLOS SUAREZ DE JESUS
In the Jetsons’ futuristic utopia, urban dwellings looked like they had been stuck atop Seattle’s
Space Needle, but by comparison, the hyperornamental architecture sprouting in Dubai today makes the
space-age family look like they were stuck in the Stone Age. Presented by Black Bird Space and Factory Model,
“Pause,” opening tonight at 6:00 at the Buena Vista Building, features works by nearly twenty Bay Area and
Miami artists exploring the architectural language being bred by urban development in Dubai, the
second-largest emirate in the United Arab Emirates.
Curated by Christopher Culver and Rebecca Miller, the exhibit includes drawings, paintings, sculpture,
and video conveying these artists’ investigation of the cartoon metropolis bubbling up in the desert
off the Persian Gulf. Urbanist poobah Rem Koolhaas recently found himself scratching his noggin,
trying to decipher how unabashed bad taste and filthy riches have resulted in such a gaudy display.
That’s what these artists are hoping to help the dazed codger figure out.

Past Lives and Personal Exorcisms
October 15 - November 15 2005
Blackbirdspace is fortunate to announce a group show of 12 talented Bay Area artists elaborating on
the ideas of Past Lives and Personal Exorcisms. This group of artists is known for enriching the San
Francisco art scene extensively as well as exhibiting internationally. Through mediums of painting,
sculpture, drawing, and performance, the artists muse on the idea of past lives within this lifetime.
The work ranges from product photography of long shelf life cookies, when taken out of context alludes
to ruins or premonitions of destruction, unearthed high school graduation portraits, a meticulously
alphabetically ordered King James bible, and visionary paintings.
Live performance will shed light on individual personal exorcisms at the opening giving the viewer
a window on the ritual practice of art and how it can be employed to exorcise deeply embedded ideas
and feelings. The work in this show humorously reveals free associations in conjunction to the theme,
encouraging a personal narrative experience for the viewer.

Blackbird
Space is pleased to present the first solo
show of San Francisco and London based artist Kelly
Eginton, All Net. A graduate of the San Francisco Art
Institute, Eginton has been included in group
exhibitions in the Bay Area, Los Angeles and New York.
Raised in a desert suburb of Southern California,
Eginton relies heavily on her formative experiences in
that particular geography to inform her work.
With exactness and a lightness of touch, Eginton pairs
bold graphic constructions of ink on paper with
baroque mirrored mudballs and sequined pinecones,
painted and feathered, to produce unexpected and
modest interventions. Her approach is direct and
minimal, tempering formalist strategies with an
intuitive logic to pursue a sensational abstraction
that works in multiple dimensions.
